If you get the chance.. dance..

It's cultural festival time in most colleges! What do you do when you see such events being organized? Do you volunteer for that play, satire, dance, stand-up comedy skit? Or do you hide-and-avoid all people related to such events? Do you make excuses about how little time you have for exams and studies? Or do you decide to wait and watch if someone else 'volunteers' you. Social events on college campuses are an important 'sandbox' - a safe area to hone your soft-skills. You are thrown into an environment where there is no prescribed syllabus. Many a times there isn't even a designated leader or manager for the event. You are expected to be creative, find quick fixes for problems that crop up. You have to manage with limited budget and time. And yet the expectations of the audience go through the roof. This is very much like any regular work day in the corporate world. You are expected to team up with people you may not know. There is no prescribed material to be read before you handle problems. You have to solve intricate issues creatively. And there is always a deadline approaching and a limit to the budget. So, this year, when you see the cultural fest posters put up, raise a hand. Volunteer. Make the most of this opportunity. Use it like an experiment to see how you react to team work, new ideas and tough expectations. Talk about it in any interview you face. You might be surprised how much the interviewer relates to your experience. :-)
